Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu, are beginning their ancient nesting season, returning to the coasts of Kailua-Kona and beyond just as their ancestors have for millions of years.

 

Recent years have seen a rise in nesting activity on Hawaii’s main islands, offering residents and visitors a rare look at these majestic creatures.

 

From May through August, female honu discreetly come ashore at night to lay eggs, each nest holding up to 100 eggs that incubate beneath the sand.
