The Island Restaurant Group has recently revitalized the dining scene in Kailua-Kona by acquiring and rejuvenating two historic establishments: the Kona Inn Restaurant and the Kona Canoe Club.

In April 2026, this newly formed group, comprising local favorites such as Jackie Rey's, Harbor House, and Umekes Fish Market Bar & Grill, purchased these iconic eateries. The acquisition aimed to preserve their rich heritage while introducing modern enhancements.

On June 18, 2026, the Kona Inn Restaurant celebrated its grand reopening, unveiling a refreshed menu and renovated dining space. The event drew a large crowd, eager to experience the blend of tradition and innovation. The restaurant's commitment to maintaining its historic charm, including the preservation of its unique belt fan system, was evident.

Longtime general manager, Leila Kanuha, expressed her enthusiasm: "I can tell you right now, every single day has been something better and more to look forward to." Her sentiments reflect the positive changes under the new ownership.

The Kona Canoe Club, known for its oceanfront views and casual atmosphere, is also set for a transformation. Plans are underway to rebrand the establishment while honoring its legacy, particularly its connection to the canoeing culture of the region.

Executive Chairman Nakoa Pabre emphasized the group's dedication to community investment and job quality. "We’re just there to help the employees we have, but work on making a better menu and better quality food and service," he stated, highlighting the focus on enhancing both the dining experience and staff welfare.

The Island Restaurant Group's efforts signify a commitment to revitalizing Kailua-Kona's culinary landscape, ensuring that these beloved establishments continue to thrive and serve the community for years to come.
