Champions for the Voiceless: A Guide to the Big Island’s Animal Rescues

From large sanctuaries to foster-based rescues, a dedicated network of organizations provides a vital lifeline for animals in need across Hawaiʻi Island.

The Big Island is home to a compassionate network of animal rescues and sanctuaries dedicated to protecting and caring for animals, from abandoned pets to exotic creatures. These organizations provide essential services, including rescue, rehabilitation, spaying and neutering, and rehoming, creating a crucial safety net for the island’s most vulnerable inhabitants.

This network includes well-known institutions like the Hawaii Island Humane Society, with multiple locations, and specialized havens such as the Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Kailua-Kona and the Big Island Farm Sanctuary in Naalehu. Grassroots efforts like Aloha Ilio Rescue, Rainbow Friends, and KARES in Hawi also play a vital role in finding forever homes for countless animals, even partnering with flight volunteers to transfer pets to the mainland.

These organizations rely heavily on community support. They encourage residents to “adopt, don’t shop,” offering opportunities to foster, volunteer, or take a shelter dog on a field trip. By providing donations or volunteering time, the community can help these champions for the voiceless continue their life-saving work, reminding everyone that a pet is a lifelong commitment.
